Stage 3 of 7 · During the conversation

Agency

Agency removes resistance before it exists.

Agency is the stage where a rep gives the customer something of value with no strings and then explicitly hands over the choice of whether to continue. It prevents resistance rather than handling it, because pushback is largely produced by the removal of choice rather than brought to the conversation.

The move

Give what a stranger never gives — value and control. One free, checkable observation about their property, theirs to keep either way. Then hand over the fork and let their answer decide.

“Want the sixty-second version — or should I just leave you the note?”

In the body

The signature move is "come look with me." Shoulder-to-shoulder at the problem beats face-to-face at the threshold. Never take the wheel back once you have handed it over.

What this stage moves for the operator

Agency is the difference between managing objections and never generating them. It also shows up after the sale: decisions people make freely hold, which moves cancellation rate, not just close rate.

The research behind it

Sources marked specific publication were checked against the publication itself — empirical studies, reviews, and meta-analyses alike. Where a claim rests on an established body of research rather than one identifiable publication, it says so — we would rather label the difference than dress a literature up as a single citation.

  1. When people feel their freedom to choose is threatened, they push back against the thing being urged. The harder the push, the harder the resistance.

Specific publication Brehm, A Theory of Psychological Reactance, Academic Press, 1966

Most doorstep resistance is manufactured by the approach, not carried to the door by the customer.

  2. Choices made autonomously are more durable than choices made under pressure.

Body of research Self-determination theory — Deci and Ryan and the research programme built on it. A body of work rather than one study.

This is the cancellation mechanism. A pressured yes and a chosen yes look identical on the step and diverge on the invoice.

  3. Unconditional giving creates a pull toward reciprocation without any stated obligation.

Body of research Cialdini and the reciprocity literature. A body of work rather than one study.

The free read is genuinely free. Attaching a condition to it converts an asset into a tactic, and customers can tell.

How Agency fails, and what to coach

The visible symptom is rarely the thing to fix. Each row names what a manager sees, what is actually causing it, and which dimension the coaching conversation belongs to.

What you see What is actually happening What to coach
Heavy objections on nearly every conversation. The rep is generating reactance by removing choice, then treating the pushback as a skill gap. Trust — give the fork and honour whichever way it points.
Strong close rate, high cancellation rate. Yeses are being pressured rather than chosen. Trust and Long Game — the problem is upstream of the paperwork.
