Stage 5 of 7 · During the conversation
Truth
Truth gets stronger after verification.
Truth is the stage where a rep presents only what addresses the established problem, states the real price without hedging, and then names the specific criteria the customer should use to compare alternatives. Actively engaging the comparison is what builds credibility — merely conceding that alternatives exist does not.
The move
Present only what fixes their root, in ninety seconds. Real price, first pass, said like a fact rather than an apology. Then engage the alternative directly — tell them exactly what to compare and on which terms.
“You should compare this. Here is exactly what to compare: scope, frequency, warranty, and total annual cost.”
In the body
Evidence shown side-by-side, never across a threshold. Voice steady on the number. A price delivered apologetically invites negotiation that a price delivered as a fact does not.
What this stage moves for the operator
Truth is what makes a quote survive a second opinion. It trades a small amount of same-day conversion for a large amount of conversion that does not unwind a week later.
The research behind it
Sources marked specific publication were checked against the publication itself — empirical studies, reviews, and meta-analyses alike. Where a claim rests on an established body of research rather than one identifiable publication, it says so — we would rather label the difference than dress a literature up as a single citation.
-
Two-sided messages beat one-sided ones only when they actively refute the opposing consideration. Simply acknowledging a limitation without engaging it is significantly less persuasive than not raising it at all.
Specific publication O'Keefe, "How to Handle Opposing Arguments in Persuasive Messages: A Meta-Analytic Review of the Effects of One-Sided and Two-Sided Messages," Annals of the International Communication Association 22(1), 1999
This is why Truth names the comparison criteria rather than vaguely conceding that alternatives exist. Refutation persuades; concession alone does not. The distinction matters enough that getting it backwards would make the move worse than skipping it.
-
Detected deception is punished out of proportion to its size — one caught exaggeration costs more than several honest claims earn.
Body of research The trust and deception-detection literature. A body of work rather than one study.
For a customer who intends to verify, checkable specificity is the strongest available credibility signal.
How Truth fails, and what to coach
The visible symptom is rarely the thing to fix. Each row names what a manager sees, what is actually causing it, and which dimension the coaching conversation belongs to.
| What you see | What is actually happening | What to coach |
|---|---|---|
| Quotes win on the step and unwind within the week. | The comparison was avoided, so the customer ran it alone and unguided. | Information — name the comparison criteria out loud. |
| The rep hedges the price. | Price is being treated as a weakness to manage rather than a fact to state. | Trust — first pass, real number, steady voice. |
